Global citizenship and Leadership

June 21, 2008 09:57 by pwestwood
The school views global citizenship and globally responsible leadership as a lifelong and expanding journey. What are the questions around developing an understanding of the dynamic nature of global citizenship? How can the school engage with these questions? How do we offer opportunities for our boys to develop their own ‘internal compass’ and what skills and knowledge do they need to be globally responsible leaders? How do we create an awareness of self and the world, that will ensure each boy is able to provide their own unique form of leadership that is less about being successful in the world and more about being successful for the world?

A few short comments:
The discussions around global citizenship and leadership were heated, varied and complex. Some people felt that their issues/agendas were more important than others and it is at this point that we need to raise the flag of caution:
1. We will always differ on this planet and that is what makes us human. It is in how we tolerate, listen, understand, process and empathise with others that will allow us to be truly GLOBAL citizens.
2. It is important to remember that being a part of a community is about finding similarities and ways of living, working and existing together. If we are only able to understand our own perspectives we will always fall short of contributing to the communities that our smaller "family" exists in.
3. Leadership is not a "recipe" or a "protocol" or a "system" that is the responsibility of the school and its teachers. Leadership is a belief and a deeper understanding of responsibility that comes from introspection and interrogation. The values that underpin great leaders comes from that place that is found by those who journey along the road of introspection, self-reflection and interrogation. We ALL (parents in particular) need to undertake that journey in order to come to the place where our children and the products of Bishops need to be.
Please be open-minded in this process as not all decisions will be in your favour or to your liking but if you engage with the process the results will be so much greater for your involvement than without.
